Before Basic Training

Congratulations! You have signed up to join the U.S. Armed Forces to serve your country. But, before you report for active duty and basic training, there are a number of things you can do to make your Basic Training easier and a better experience.
Get in shape quick. Run, run and run some more (about 3-5 miles ought to do it each workout). Do about 50 sit ups and push ups plus the usual jumping jacks, leg lifts and etc. 20 pull ups might suffice and make sure you can traverse the monkey bars. The US physical fitness guidelines would be helpful.
Next...start getting up early, around 5 A.M. and going to bed early (8 P.M. at the latest). When you start Basic Training you will probably get up even earlier.
If you don't know by now, learn how to wash your clothes. There's not enough time to learn on the job.
Learn how to polish combat boots with a "spit" shine. If you are "Army" airborne boots are recommended because they are more durable, have a steel toe and can polish easily to an incredible shine.
Ask your special loved ones to write to you. This will help sustain you during the Basic Training phase.
Remember...it is the mission of Basic Training to tear you down and then build you up the way the service wants you to be. Once you get through the first phase of Basic... life WILL get better. When the Drill Sergeant's scream at you just smile inside for it is just a process that will make you stronger.
When you make friends, stand by them always. They will be all you have if you face war. Never complain, hold your head high because...you are now part of the greatest fighting force in the history of the world.
Preparing before you report for duty will help you get a head start on service to this great country of ours. We wish you all the best and no matter what...the country is behind you 100%.
God bless you and God speed.
